Sandra Chevrier
A Canadian artist born in 1983. Fascinated by art from a young age, she earned a BA in Visual and Media Arts from the University of Quebec. Calling herself a "gaze collector," she created a series of portraits titled "The Cages," in which attractive faces are covered with comic book collages. "The Cages" explores dichotomies—power and vulnerability, freedom and captivity, reality and imagination—drawing between the fantastical heroines of comic books and their oppressed identities. While the eyes of her works are painted with emotion and sensitivity, her faces are partially obscured by the comic book hero collages, like a mask, concealing their emotions and flaws. Her exceptional skill and realism convey that perceived superheroes are, in reality, fragile, flawed, and fallible human beings. She has exhibited solo and group exhibitions around the world, and in 2018, she exhibited her sculptures for the first time at the Lancaster Museum of Art (MOAH) in California, in an exhibition titled "The Allure of Cages and Freedom." Her works are collected by art collectors worldwide, including prominent figures.
